Jetty Structure

Problem

Our client had a steel structure which is open to the elements and is critical to their business. This structure had become potentially unsafe due to fatigue, rust and damage.

Overview

We were asked to carry out a structural survey of this structure and provide solutions for keeping it in service.

This structure is an essential part of our client’s business and is used to move materials from the port to their landing area. It is only used twice a month but is an integral part of the smooth running of the business. Our brief was to ensure that the structure was in a satisfactory condition to be used for the next five years.

Key Challenges

The structure was required to be supported whilst cross sections were removed and new sections installed and welded into place. This was done one section at a time and braced to prevent movement. Once a section had been removed it was imperative that this section was complete the same day to ensure stability of the structure. No works could take place when winds were higher than 15mph due to the nature of this structure.

Successes

This structure was completed and inspected within 2 weeks and our work has enabled our client to have assurance that the structure will now be sturdy for at least the next five years
